Neostylis Lou Sneary 'Colorful Blue'
I posted the photos along with the text below to a.b.p.o and was quite
disappointed at the lack of response considering the fact that just about 2 months ago this particular orchid was *the* topic for quite a few days. Unfortunately at that time I didn't have one so I never saved the posts. I am hoping to get some response, particularly about open basket planting. To email me privately: grdengrl at optonline dot net ------------------------------------------------------- I got this guy in the mail today as an eBay purchase. Several leaves were detached on the side, and some of the leaves that are attached to the plant are showing some kind of "damage". Is this fungus? Is this something that I need to worry about or do something about? The seller said that I should repot into an open basket (which I have). I don't have experience with open basket growing (does that mean that I just toss the plant in w/o any potting media, how do I secure it to basket if that is the case?) or repotting and would very much appreciate any advice. As to the black leaf and the dry leaf, should I maybe return the item for a replacement? Is this a good time to repot? Any assistance is greatly appreciate, Mariana |

Neostylis Lou Sneary 'Colorful Blue'
Hi Mariana-
Looks like a nice plant to me. I'm not expert on orchid diseases so I'll defer commenting on the leaves to others in the group. I have a similar Neostylis which I have mounted on a piece of crepe myrtle. I looks very attractive, the wood mount is lasting beautifully, and most importantly, the plant is thriving. I mounted it on a small pad of sphagnum moss and tied the to the mount with clear small gauge fish line. The roots are totally exposed. I water daily until the roots are totally green. It gets fertilized with dilute DynaGrow about twice a month. It's been mounted for two years now with good new growth of both roots and leaves and has rebloomed without difficulty. Good luck with it. Mariana,
I suspect the leaf damage is physical, not due to any pathogen. I prefer to grow the neostylis intergenerics in small baskets, but with a CHC/charcoal/perlite medium after sparsely lining the basket with coconut husk fiber. -- Ray Barkalow - First Rays Orchids - www.firstrays.com Plants, Supplies, Books, Artwork, and Lots of Free Info! .. . . . . . . . . . . Mariana,
My "Little Lou" as the kids call him, is in a very Japanese-looking bamboo basket with a type of expanded clay like "Prime Agra" filling it out. I will post a pic on abpo. I water it daily, fertilizing whenever I remember, which is about every ten days but much oftener when it is actively growing. It seems to be very happy with this arrangement, as it is making two spikes right now, after aborting one this summer due to dryness (orchid-sitter's fault). I didn't look at your pic on abpo, since your pictures seem to be so huge for me to download on my pay-by-the-split-second connection. Maybe you could make the pictures a bit lighter in bytes and more people would open them? Just a thought, there may be more out there who pay by time online... Hello Reka,
Thank you for your response. I most certainly will shrink the photo in size, I just didn't think that what I was posting was too large. I pretty much stick to 800x600dpi and I save it at the highest quality. And since I started posting in the a.b.p.o I never heard anyone saying that the size is too large so I assumed it was alright. I will go ahead and reduce the image and will repost it. What exposure to light do you provide for it? Thanks so much for your response, Mariana "Reka" wrote in message ... Frank, thank you for your response, it is very helpful. I'm wondering if I
can line a small wooden basket with a tad of sphagnum moss wrapped around the roots and secure the plant by fish line to the actual basket. Again thank you, Mariana p.s. What light exposure do you provide for it? "Frank H. Kirchner" wrote in message news:QK%lb.38088$N94.8839@lakeread02... Hi Mariana- Looks like a nice plant to me. Lou is on a south balcony in the summer, under an awning that lets through
quite a bit of light and even some direct sun at various times of the day. In the winter he is in my winter garden in a south window and gets direct sun from the front for a couple of hours, supplemented by two fluorescents from the back. Neostylis Lou Sneary 'Colorful Blue'
When the ancient war dogs did battle on Fri, 24 Oct 2003 00:51:07 GMT,
"GrlIntrpted" did speak the following bit of wisdom: The seller said that I should repot into an open basket (which I have). I don't have experience with open basket growing (does that mean that I just toss the plant in w/o any potting media, how do I secure it to basket if that is the case?) You can tie it in, the same as you would a vanda I guess. But I think you'd have a bit of trouble trying to keep bark or coco chips or whatever in there. Personally, I grow my Lou Sneary in a small plastic vanda basket with just osmunda fiber. I used the chunks and when I originally potted it, I just packed it in tightly between the plant and the sides of the basket. The plant seems to love this material and has since put down many roots. I'm looking for my first flowers hopefully this year. Hope this helps. * * * * * Karen C. Southern CT / USDA Zone 6 Spammers be damned! I can't be emailed from this account...
