They came to no conclusion, but are still working on it.
The 3 things they mentioned were excessive temperatures, mineral imbalances, and viruses. They ignored the temps later in the discussion, stated they found no viruses but left that option open, and were unable to induce them with Mn toxicity, which was stated as a "known" problem in some plants. Well, they don't seem to suffer much under their sclerenchlyma cell deterioration, so it doesn't matter too much.
