Based on what I see at HD, as I pratically live there I would have to say it
is the HD staff who are not too attuned to the care of orchids as the stores
in our area are littered with bargain bin orchids for less than $10.00 as
most are close to death or just horrible shape.

The main reason for these orchids looking like they do is the fact that they
water the orchids like they water the impaitents, i.e. everyday!!!!

Funny, where I am originally from, they watered them once every other week
(sometimes less often). That didn't work too well either. I've also seen them
put on bottom shelves, under other plants, where they get almost no light.

Most of
the orchids that I see and check out are soaked and those that look ill have
serious root problems due to the daily waterings. Yours had probably
already had its card punched before you bought it and took the nosedive
while you were away. Most likely nothing you could have done. I have
noticed cymbidiums showing up in our local HD's, however I have also noticed
these same plants 2-3 weeks later on the bargain pile with blacktips,
rotting roots, and leaves falling off.

I've never seen Cymbidiums at the HD here, but the HD here gets them from a
local company. They do surprisingly well with the orchids they have, especially
compared to the HD in my hometown, which could kill some within a week of
arrival.

Hello,

I purchased a beautiful cymbidium about a month ago in HD. It came
with two long stalks of buds/flowers and the third one was growing
fast and showed 10 buds. There are 4 bamboo shoot like structures
around the bottom and I hope they can turn into flower stalks
eventurally. The buds opened one by one and the shoots growed taller.
Life was great until I left for a biz trip last week. I left on
Saturday March 6th. On Friday I watered and feeded the plant. I also
adjusted the room temperature to around 60C because I read that low
temp. will help with bud formation. But when I returned on Mar12, it
is really a disaster scene! All the flowers and buds are almost dead,
they are either wilt or fell off!!! The flowers are all gone, the 10
buds on the growing stalk are dropping and turn black. Many black leaf
tips and I have to cut those tips. Cannot see much difference on
bamboo shoots but I guess they suffered as well.

I'm wondering what went wrong? Is it too cold? Is it staying in dark
for too long? Six days darkness can be that bad? It is really liveless
now. I watered and feeded again. Really hope it can be better.

Is there anything I can do to help it? So upset to see a beautiful
plant turn bad.

Thanks a lot for your help!

Tiff
