I'd go with Dames' Violet except the flowers are much too small
(do they themselves grow bigger?)

Other than that nothing much seems to match the leaves in the
4-petal section of Newcomb.

The cactus thing is all over and I'm too impatient to wait for a
flower (might be a hundred years!). What is it?

An extremely invasive Eurasian weed. Kill it (if you can) before
it multiplies. Incidentally, it's quite edible, if you like
garlicky and mustardy flavours. (Alliarum officinalis)

If you're thinking of Dame's Rocket, Hesperis matronalis, the plant
is too small, and it's a bit early for it, too. While you sometimes
see white ones, they are usually shades of purple.

It's common mullein, Verbascum sp. It's biennial. Later this summer
the rosette will put up a flower stalk 1.5-2m tall, with yellow flowers,
unless it's one of the cultivated ones which have white or purple
flowers (unlikely). Mullein is another common Eurasian weed.

Right, I recorded them around May 4 in previous years, but I don't
know what the baby ones might look like. The 3 shades are about equally
common, unless they're planting them deliberately that way at the
ends of their driveways around here.
