Default Green Algee

I have a big pond, in cement... the green algee it's a big problem. Just
don't know what else I can do to get rid of it!
I have a good filter with UV, but not enough. I have planted it and all,
but still not enough. I have even covered the pond with a net, so it
wouldn't get so much sun... it didn't work!
Sometimes I see pictures of ponds that are cristal clear.
The only thing I don't have it's rocks at the bottom of the pond!

Help?

=====================
Most ponds turn green in spring. If it doesn't clear up on it's own you can
do some partial water changes and add another UV light. Also, remove any
"stuff" on the bottom of your pond such as leaves, twigs, dead fish, dead
frogs and other trash turning into algae food. Remove the dead leaves from
all your pond plants. Can your pond be overcrowded with too many fish,
frogs, newts etc? Is your filer adequate for the size and fishload in your
pond. In desperation you can use an algae killer but that just turns the
live algae into dead decomposing algae to feed yet another algae bloom.

Even water without fish will get an algae buiildup but in general you
need a decent supply of nutrients to get a heavy growth of algae.
You did not mention fish at all, and assuming it does have fish,
nutrients can come from whats fed to them, as well as what comes back
out the opposite end, Dust and runoff water can also add nutrients.
If it was like this last year as well and you were not over feeding or
feeding cheap foods or overfertilizing water plants, I would conisder
oxidizing the water with potassium permangante, as early into spring
as possible so the water is cooler and makes things better for the
fish, however if no fish is imvolved then anytime is fine. PP is not
recomended for use when water temp is in the 80 deg or higher range so
treating mid summer etc is usually a no go for most ponds.

YOu can also use some BARACLEAR P80 which is aluminum sulphate (alum)
mixed with sodium bentonite clay into pellets. It is harless to fish.
Its used by lots of golf courses and water authorities in this area to
control algae n the holding resivoirs / lagoons, and ponds etc on the
golf coarse and it does work just fine. The city park here uses it in
their huge 3 acre koi pond at the zoo, as well as two city parks with
koi ponds and the water n them stays nice all year round.

Tell us more about your pond, gallons, fish, filter, how often the water
goes thru said filter. Water treatments, etc. See Sick Fish/Pond form,
fill it out. I bet we can help with enough information. ~ jan

how many gallons and what are the dimensions of the pond, how deep is the pond
how old is the pond
how many fish and how big
how often do you feed and how much at a time
how big is the pump and filter
is there a thick layer of goo on the bottom of the pond, when was it last cleaned,
was it ever clear

usually green water results from too many nutrients and not enough water or
filtration. new ponds start pea soup and clear up, that is when people put in fish.

ponds that are crystal clear either dont have fish or have very expensive filtration
systems. I can see the bottom of my 4' deep pond once my veggie filter is up and
running, with a UV filter running. http://weloveteaching.com/mypond/mypond.htm
I have 26 koi in 1600 gallons. Ingrid

Greetings

how many gallons

Well, because of the shape of the pond I really don't know! Is there a easy
way to know?

and what are the dimensions of the pond,

It has a perimeter of 22mt

how deep is the pond

It's 60 cm deep

how old is the pond

It has 5 years

how many fish and how big

There are no more than 40 fish. Most of them have 20 cm

how often do you feed and how much at a time

Once a day, about 50grams of food

how big is the pump and filter

The pump pumps 3000 lt/h
The filter it's a beer size barrel.
It's cleaned once a day by summer, and once each 2 days in winter

is there a thick layer of goo on the bottom of the pond, when was
it last cleaned, was it ever clear

Yes there is. Well it's clear every time we clean it for about 2 months than
it gets green!

Here's your problem. The filter is WAY too small. If you have to clean it
every day to every other day, in my book it is too small by about 30 days
for one part, a year too small for another.

You have two choices to get rid of the green water. Add more plants and
reduce the fish load down until the water finally stays clear, or build/buy
a bigger filter.

I have 5678 liter pond (1500 gallons), an approximately 6 medium size koi
approx. 40-50cm (assuming large is 36 inches/91cm) & 10-12 20cm/6-8inches
koi. My filter is one 208 liter/55 gallon prefilter, and two 208 liter/55
gallon bio-filter. The pump, is turning the pond over once/hour. The
bio-filters are cleaned once/year. The prefilter every 6 to 8 weeks. Now
wouldn't you rather have a maintenance ritual like that? ;-) Not to mention
clear water. ~ jan

Default Green Algee - check for mineral film

"Daniel E Preston" wrote in message

UV will only take care of the pea soup algae. Thats the stuff that
makes your water foggy. If thats what you have you may want to check
the bulb to make sure its not blown.

================
The bulb may also just need a cleaning. Mine gets a mineral film after a
few weeks that must be removed for the unit to keep the algae down.

Have you tried using a Blue Dye?

At this stage I have to declare an interest in that my Company sells a couple of products that will "reduce" the growth of Algae.

The first product, DyoFix Pond Blue works by reflecting the sun's natural Ultra Violet light so that it does not reach the bottom of the pond, and without UV the algae has nothing to feed on. The product is safe for fish and any other creatures that live in, or visit ponds. Do not be alarmed at the thought of having a bright blue pond as, at the correct dosage, the shade is almost imperceptable (I hope that is spelt correctly!)

The Blue dye (at correct dosage) only works with ponds that are at least 24 inches deep

The other product is for smaller, fish free ponds, DyoFix Pond Black. You may have seen it in use on the BBC show "A Year at Kew". This is also harmless, but dyes the water Black meaning no light gets through at all, but the reflective properties are fantastic and it makes the pond look like it is a mile deep!!
