Default Filter material question

I am working on the designs for my new filter system to be used when I get
my 1600gph pump.

I will have 2 45 gallon boxes, one will be for sediment and mechanical
filter and the second will be the bio filter.

My question is, what is a good filter material for the mechanical filter.
The boxes are about 19" wide and 18" deep, and I plan to mount the material
vertically almost like a baffle.

Any help would be appreciated.
