After doing pond chores this morning I sat down
to watch some HGTV between ponding and quilting.
There was some show on about a botanical gardens.
They were talking about when the place was built.
They wanted a reflecting pond so they dug a hole
and filled it with water.
Only the water wouldn't stay. It would drain away.
So they happened to have an elephant nearby, at a
zoo. They walked the elephant over and let her wallow
in the mud and dirt and pretty soon she packed down
the stuff so well that the hole has held water ever
since!

and iris, cleaned out waterfall, cleaned pump, cleaned
filter and feeling smug ;-)

though, there is still quite a bit of snow surrounding the

That was in Fort Worth. They 'borrowed' the elephant from the Fort Worth Zoo. I watched
that too, in between transplanting, and going to Home Depot for a bluebird house and pole
(and baffle to keep snakes and raccoons out). We came home with half a truckload of
topsoil, several plants, and a mountain laurel...lol.

I told my hubby about the show, and he said one of these weekends we will take a road trip
up there to see the gardens.

Well.. back to work. I have a birdhouse to put up....

I'm in Fort Worth, think i'll rent me an elephant! (not)

Today i cleaned around the pond, took the net off, and planted 6
hosta babies. All 3 fish were at the top so they got a little food. I
moved some azolla and noticed baby lily pads and something i couldn't
believe. I had been given some water iris seeds 18 months ago. I tried
to grow these things and i couldn't. I had one little baby iris that
was just so pitiful looking i gave up on it. Just for the heck of it,
i sat the pot down it the water before winter and when i pulled up the
pot, figuring i could use it for something else, I have a green
healthy iris in there. Sometimes we just try too hard!!! It must have
6-8 inches of water over it. It's STAYING there! I put the taro back
into the pond. Some in a pot and some i stuck in the hole of a brick
in the water. Now we are hunkering down for a severe storm.

Where are you putting your hostas? In the water, in a bog, or around the pond? Are they
'wet' area friendly? I have always grown mine in around the house, in shady spots (like in
the spaces between shrubs along the side of the house. I planted some under one of our
pine trees, and they have more than quadrupled in size in less than a week.

I repotted my taro today. The roots were literally climbing out of it's pot. The lilies
are all fine, so I left them alone. But I had to take the toilet brush to the string algae
(again *sigh*). All the fish wanted to do while I was in the pond was nip at my legs and
swim to the exact spot I was planning on putting my foot down next.. lol.

I planted the hostas surrounding a log behind the pond. It stays shady
most of the day and i keep it moist for my toad friends that i am just
about ready for.
