Hard to say your desired effect (but from the drawing), I think your
gonna need more pump power, or better yet I'd use 2 and shut the
recirculating off at night... keeping the sand filter running 24/7
during summer.

Hi,
Is the 'head pool' in your diagram the beginning of the stream? Why is this
water not filtered? The 'tree' is the veggie filter, right?
Not at all familiar with the Ultima 11 bio tube filter but think that
frequent backwashing would be in order with this setup. The fact that you
have a bottom drain is good however, think about this, the particulate
(fecal matter, plant parts, etc.) in the pond, settles to the bottom. This
is nature's mechanical filter in action, remember crap flows downhill.
Forcing this 'dirtiest' water by the pump impeller makes a slurry out of
everything and increases the difficulty to re-filter it and would increase
the need to backwash the filter. I would have the water flow from the bottom
drain to another basin and draw the water from the top of this basin to the
filter. This would dramatically cut down on what enters the Ultima. Ideally
I would have the pump on the other side of the Ultima because the water
should be 'clean' at this point and pumping clean water is best. The
additional basin could be barrel/s or even another liner pond but covered is
better as it limits sun exposure and wind blown debris. Don't know the
skimmer you've chosen and won't get into the UV or not UV question here but
I assume there are mats in the skimmer, I prefer nets because they catch the
larger floating pieces but don't clog as fast as mats and the Ultima should
filter the small stuff.
There will be other opinions, this is a fact, all filters work some better
than others and some make you work more.
HTH -_- how

I love the falls and streams. You are a huge worker with vision! Keep us
posted as you progress, please

Thoughts for what they are worth (free!).

1. You will need a LARGE flow. You might check with some of the folk in
the group about the flow that will be needed to have depth of water over so
many steep runs. You might even want them as streams with falls. Can your
pump produce the flow needed?

2. The filter system may want a slower flow than the streams. Multiple
pumps? Divided flow (cf. our valve system).

3. If each downflow has a different feed, they will all get the amount of
water that you offer them. If they exit by gravity from one pond, it will
be very hard to get the flow you want. Our two falls have four total feeds
and are serarately regulatable. We like that.

4. Could you add a veggie filter or other settlement area? Think headwaters
enlarged. With veggies, the water will handle little fish and still
function as a filer. Collects muck, easy to drain, etc. We rapidly moved
away from mechanical filtration requiring backwashing...think hassle for
ever. Our system needs annual draining via dottom drains. Baby fish grow
in the upper berm vf ponds (cf. website*.

5. Can you enlarge the pond? 1250 is great. If the deep area were larger,
your fish might be happier...and you will be as well once you get under way
using it. Your back might not like it as much now! You have done a MASSIVE
amount of digging already.

Great work. Good luck.

Jim
