"Peter James" wrote in message .. . I want to build a raised vegetable bed. I have metres 1.80 x cm80 space available. I've used 6 inch wide gravel board to make raised beds. Each side's two pieces nailed to 3 X 3 X 12 inch pieces of fence posts. At the corners I used 3 inch coach screws (pre-drill the wood) on the narrow ends to hold the thing together. I used bitumen paint on the inside (two coats) to cut down on water loss from the soil. If possible move the soil around the bed to fill it and replace with gravel chippings. My runner beans are in a 4 X 8 ft X 12 inch raised bed and I've used a leaky hose connected to a water butt to keep them going. I picked a load yesterday and there's still more coming on. Geoff |

I built three 8'x8' beds last year using patio stones -- 16"x24" --
stood on the long edge with a wood frame around the top to hold them in place. Worked great! I wouldn't use any treated lumber around beds that are to be used to grow food. |
