Bits of graph paper are best, as you don't lose the earlier ideas. Cost a bit less, too. The Rolls-Royce is squared tracing paper, as it allows superimposition. Just as no gardening book is a substitute for the _learned_ imaginative sympathy with plants people misguidedly call "green fingers", so no computer program can replace your knowledge of the site and visions of what it could look like in five, ten, twenty years. And don't even joke about moving: you're very lucky, because a hillside is the most exciting site you can have. -- Mike. |

Any suggestions (apart from move) Don't move, you're going to have a very interesting garden - think waterfalls, a pond etc. But over the years, the general consensus here seems to be that this gardening software lark can't be beaten by a stub of pencil and the back of an envelope. ;-) Easier to carry into the garden, for a start! If it's a new garden to you, think of how you will use it, maybe wait a year to do anything because the use you make of it may develop over time. Think of children playing, if pertinent to you, think of clotheslines, think of bits to sit in to enjoy the mid day sun or the evening sun etc. -- Sacha www.hillhousenursery.co.uk South Devon (remove the weeds to email me) |

You'll find books in the library which describe how to measure the drop (s) with simple materials like planks, stakes and string. Map them onto paper the way hill contours apear on a large-scale map. Or, buy in some sand (which you're probably going to use anyway on paths or slabs or whatever) make yourself an outdoor sandpit. and play sand modelling. Since you sound a bit doubtful about hillgardening, I'm guessing you're pretty new to gardens. Start visiting other hillside gardens to get ideas and see what a great asset they are. A great source of local gardens to visit, is the Yellow Book (published annually in the new year, costs about £6). It lists hundreds of private and public Gardens Open for Charity. Available in booksellers everywhere or from website. Janet |
