Default Treefern & frost

Despite my gloomy outlook, Ray decided to leave the treefern out on the tea
room lawn and it has survived quite happily, despite nights cold enough to
ice over the ponds at least a bit. It has fairly high hedges nearby but
little tree canopy above it.

Early days though ... I may have to do something with mine this winter - as
even sub-tropical urban Bristol may well get very cold later.

My banana (Basjoo) got through last year's cold snap unprotected (except by
rampant bamboo) and resprouted from the top - I really must get out there
and wrap up the 6 foot trunk - it'd be a shame for it to start again from
the bottom when it's so close to flowering size ....

..

I think we'll have to move the tree fern in if it gets any colder but it
seems to be "so far so good". The Ensetes went in a week or so ago, before
we had any frost at all.

Being lazy I gave up protecting my Tree ferns years ago. The biggest one has
kept it's leaves for the last three years, although the oldest are starting
to look a bit tatty on the edges. Wind seems to be the biggest enemy . Those
that get blasted have adapted by producing much smaller fronds whereas the
one that is in a fairly sheltered position has become quite massive.

The nursery that sold me these plants (Cornwall) tried everything to
dissuade me on the basis of me being in what they described as Windy cold
Yorkshire--cheeky batards
