It's the internet equivalent of graffiti - Or less than Graffiti as there is
no message, just aren't I clever to waste all these peoples time!
If there was some relevant political or social message I might quietly
admire them but as it is...
- Yes Dickheads!

It's a program based on Markov probability functions.

No problems here. It gives all legitimate users an incentive to get a
proper newsreader and/or learn how to use it, which is a good thing for
this newsgroup.

Just out of curiosity, Janet. Or anyone else, for that matter. What
criteria do you use to dump these?

They're not X-posted, have random subject headers, don't have a common
author and I'm slightly reluctant to kill based on the number of lines
(many are as low as 75, and some even down to 50 - which would mean
losing regular posts).

I don't have any particular filters - it's filtered out automatically by
good old nin.

They appear as lone messages, not part of a thread. The subjects are
relatively long and lower case. Rarely, if ever, is the subject started
with an uppercase letter.

by good old nin.

NIN gets the handle on them fairly quickly but I still got a few hundred
this morning.

I go to the bottom of them, select all, scanning quickly every title in
case a short proper message is there, then just remove. Easy with
Turnpike. Not sure about other newsreaders. Doesn't take more than a
couple of seconds.

My newsreader usually filters out most of them before I download my
groups. Otherwise

Ditto.

Come on then you two gigabrains, how do you scan *quickly* every title.
I got a couple of thousand duff messages.
I know us lot in Yorkshire are not renowned for being quick but.........

All you need to do is select the beginning of the junk, then scroll down.
Your brain is really good at spotting patterns, even if they're going by
quickly. I can do it, and I'm in rural (New) York.
Then, assuming you're using windoze, hold down the shift key and click the
last one. Delete however your mail proggy does it (shift+del key works for
me), and they're gone.
Of course, the loons who do this sort of thing are only looking for
attention, and any sort will do. Sad, really...

As you go down the list (at least on Turnpike) you can see the length of
the subject - it stands out a mile when you see a short subject of one
or two words.
Whipping down the page is just a matter of scrolling down.

Turnpike has some drawbacks but this isn't one of them

Indeed. I was just hoping there was a way of avoiding downloading them.
[Besides switching news supplier.]

I've just asked in the TP newsgroup and there isn't really a catch-all
based on the headers available. Aside from utilising the
"/^X\-Complaints\-To: /h" which appears with each batch.
[You can use TP's Connect window to see the obvious impending avalanche,
stop the download, sample a header, and then reconnect.]

Not sure about other newsreaders. Doesn't take more than a couple of
seconds.

As I said, its only been particularly annoying here because I'm still on
standard snail-up. When I switch to a broadband connection soon it'll
become nothing more than a minor irritation.

Select the beginning of the junk???

Scroll down???

How do you get access to your news server to do this?
Or are you saying download the headers, then select and delete from
them.

I don't want to download ANY of this garbage. Not even the headers.
I don't want to scroll through 300 headers looking for a genuine post.
I don't want to keep hitting the get next 300 headers button.

Given that there are over 5000 posts on my news server for the next 7
days, I will
be going to google groups and looking there.

Perhaps there is an argument for genuine posts here to have a header
[On topic]
or [NG] not garbage to highlight proper posts in deference to the
anarchists rubbish.

who doesn't think they are looking for any sort of attention.

You can always get 1000 headers per update if that's any help.
