Default onion fly?

I was delighted to learn on this newsgroup that I could start my onion sets
off in pots; I did this and they have been doing well. My deep veg bed is
now ready so, after that lovely rain, I decided to plant out the onions.
Admiring the lovely white roots and enjoying the delicious aroma, I was
suddenly struck by thoughts of the dreaded onion fly: duh! Of course, onion
sets are supposed to help you avoid this pest but not, presumably, if you go
waving the roots of young onions around ... I have covered the newly
planted onions for tonight, hoping the smell might have dispersed by the
morning. Any advice, anyone? Am I worrying about nothing, or for real?
Thanks in advance for your help.
