Default Loss of hardy pot plants

Several of my hardy plants in large pots have died over Winter. I
suspect this is because of the low temperatures we had the roots have
been damaged. Is this the most likely reason (they were OK last year),
if so is there anything that can be done to protect them without moving
them indoors?
