Default Further to the Acer's poor foliage

As discussed previously ref my Acers lack of foliage this year, I paid a
visit to the specialist it was purchased from.

ALL their trees looked fantastic but I might add they were all under cover
and protected from wind, rain and frost.

Their only suggestion on my problem was the dry winter, late frosts or even
easterly winds which we have apparently had this year.

The tree is looking sad but we gave it some topping feed yesterday and will
see what happens next year. I think there will be plenty pruning later this
year.

Yes my Acer is not doing to well either, the leaves seem small and

shrivelled, also we must remember that a lot of experts and garden centres
buy their Acers from nurseries that have forced these trees on all winter.

Out of curiousity, what kind of acers do you have and which ones do you
prune?

1 Acer Shirasawanum...........I did very little pruning as last year all
branches were healthy.

I'm sure you know that they don't like pruning beside removing dead
branches. I never bring a secateur near my acers. I wait till the twigs
snap by themselves and remove them by hand. The Shirasawanum is so slow
growing I was surprised to learn that some people prune it hard back to
get a 'yellow' mop of leaves. I think it's a shame as I like the
natural shape they take - very japanese )
