Celebrity works. It most seriously works. A couple of months ago we
looked at the menu outside the New Angel in Dartmouth (John Burton Race)
where the food is *wonderful*. However, the prices have taken a real
upwards hike but I heard someone say "not that expensive when you think he's
on TV and everything". Hmmmm!
I wonder if Titch gets paid for supporting charities and of course, we will
probably never know but I do hope the answer is 'not'. I'm sure he can be
as hard-nosed a businessman as the next person but there is no doubt he's a
'draw'. Botham doesn't get paid, AFAIK, though at the time I was involved,
he did have to wear a Nike cap and not an LRF one! John Nettles did a mass
of fantastic and free stuff for us in Jersey, turning out on many, many
weekends at various things with the Bergemobile, as did Sean Arnold, his
'sergeant' in Bergerac. So did Jack Higgins (Harry Patterson real name)
and all brought in loads of punters, to be frank. They were just SO
generous with their time, patience, kindness to those who wanted to meet
them or be photographed with them, that I remember them with fondness when
reading about some wannabe throwing a tantrum! One is a personal friend that
I've known for many years but ALL are genuinely nice to be with people who
were very aware that the public made them famous, so the public (and
charity) deserved some of their time. I never heard a syllable of 'moan'
from any of them at giving up yet another Saturday/Sunday to sit at yet
another féte. Love 'em or hate 'em, there is some public attraction to
people who are famous, however briefly!
Look at the recent brouhaha over Madonna. Whatever one may think of it,
people have been made strongly aware that there are orphans in Malawi,
needing loving families. It works.

I've heard of Madonna but none of those others.

We live under a stone - and like it. But I worked for a photographer when AT
came for some PR shots. I didn't like his attitude and could never
understand why he's supposed to be a sex symbol. To me he's, frankly, ugly.
But so am I :-)

Somebody once gave me one of his 'novels' - Mr McSomebody I think. I
couldn't get more than a few pages, puerile or what! Poor writing to boot.

But Mary, 'some' people dwell on name dropping and telling all and sundry
who they rub shoulders with. There is nothing great in 'bumping into' well
known people, even working in conjunction with them, but to 'some' people,
it is the "IN" thing to do.

I was having the p*** taken out of me on another newsgroup and fired back
with some name dropping in a great big long list of people, that through
being in the hotel business, and working for myself over 50 years had met or
'rubbed shoulders' with. They couldn't see I was taking the p*** out of
them!!!

Someone once told me you are only four people away from the Queen. Through
people I know, I am two people away from the Queen. SO WHAT??????

How many people are you away from the Queen? And does it do you any 'good'?
Of course not :-((

Did I tell you I had to turn down my invitation to St James' Palace? ;-}

No, among MANY people. People who turned up in their thousands and thus gave
money to the charity we were working for. I'm not commenting on it or
commending it or whatever but there can be no doubt that celebrity has its
uses when used wisely and generously.

Look at the recent brouhaha over Madonna. Whatever one may think of it,
people have been made strongly aware that there are orphans in Malawi,
needing loving families. It works.

Really? You have never heard of the TV series 'Bergerac', filmed back in
the 70s/80s, or the current and ongoing 'Midsomer Murders", starring
Nettles? Even if you don't watch tv, they do come up in newspapers from
time to time! , And you have never heard of Jack Higgins and e.g. the book
and film, The Eagle has Landed, or Ian Botham, the world-famous cricketer?
That seems quite extraordinary, even in terms of my personal preference for
p&q.

We live under a stone - and like it. But I worked for a photographer when AT

I think that from the PR/charity etc. pov his great gift is to be a good tv
presenter. He talks to the camera as if it were a friend and believe me,
that really IS a gift. Like him or not, it works.

Somebody once gave me one of his 'novels' - Mr McSomebody I think. I
couldn't get more than a few pages, puerile or what! Poor writing to boot.

Lucrative, nonetheless and able to pull in the public to help charities
which, in this case, is what matters. I rather enjoyed his latest book,
BTW, read it on holiday.

I'm not into cricket, except having had a son who played it at school, so
you have to get to know something about it, however slight! But Botham has
been around for years and very famous for it, too but possibly not out of
UK! Midsomer Murders is on ITV so again, perhaps you wouldn't see it. It's
well done in most ways but the body count is enormously high and is almost a
joke. It's often described as being the most dangerous place to live in
England - if it were real!

'Midsomer Murders' appear on both Dutch and Belgian TV.
Bergerac is being shown yet agin on Belgian TV.

It's quite funny to watch the earliest in the Bergerac series because not
only do I recognise some of the extras, we then watch Midsomer Murders to
see John N has aged very fast! It was also quite amusing at the time to see
how the hunt for desirable locations made some roads in Jersey end in
entirely the 'wrong' place.

There was much hilarity elsewhere with the episode where Midsomer
Zomat had the Henley Regatta course flowing through it.

Somewhere on the web there's a list of all the locations they used - many
of them very beautiful.

We don't read any newspapers. Having been involved in news publishing I'm
worse than a sceptic, I'm certainly not paying money for them.

Not really - that's why he's used and paid, to promote English meat as a
cartoon character. He's one of the best cricketers England ever had so his
name is still in the forefront of sport in those terms - bit like John
Arlott and that wonderful cricket commentating voice of his. I think Botham
moved to Alderney to be near Arlott! And Botham, now living in Somerset, is
a cricket commentator, too. Of course, if you have no media information you
can't know that. But he's still a household name.
