More rosemary
Well, we'll get the confusion out of the way first - Ray and I were thinking
of two different rosemaries in two different gardens, as things turn out! I was convinced both were in one garden but clearly I'm wrong as we found today. And the owners of both houses are abroad so the plot got a lot thicker. However, we went over to Salcombe today to the house he was thinking of and took a photo of the rosemary there. Olivier Filippi says he seriously doubts it's R. Barcelona because that one gets damaged by frost even in his trial garden and he says it's not worth photographing. However, I've sent him a photograph of the Salcombe one and promised him some cuttings if it isn't one he has. He has never heard of Jackman's Prostrate, either and Burncoose have no photo of it. Filippi has asked for cuttings of that, if I can get some and has promised us some cuttings of new cultivars of his, in return, which is very kind. Burncoose have also had a photo from me and I'm waiting to hear back from them. They say the one in their car park is Jackman's Prostrate but they have no idea of its provenance and say only that is has been around a long time, so it's certainly possible that it's got more than one name and that the nursery in the east of UK got it from Burncoose under that name. I hope our photos of the Salcombe one will be on our web site soon but if anyone wants an email pic, let me know. Ray thinks it's possible/probable that the other rosemary I was thinking about is the same one (the two couples are friends and neighbours) but because it's on a much lower wall in the second garden, it runs across the path and on down another wall, IIRC. The one we photographed this afternoon is on a wall that is probably about 10' high in places and it hangs right down to the ground where it has been trimmed just to touch the tarmac drive. The wall is rendered, so it isn't rooting and sending out new plants from any cracks or joints in the wall; it hangs in a solid curtain. -- Sacha http://www.hillhousenursery.co.uk South Devon http://www.discoverdartmoor.co.uk/ (remove weeds from address) |
