Well, we'll get the confusion out of the way first - Ray and I were thinking
of two different rosemaries in two different gardens, as things turn out! I
was convinced both were in one garden but clearly I'm wrong as we found
today. And the owners of both houses are abroad so the plot got a lot
thicker. However, we went over to Salcombe today to the house he was
thinking of and took a photo of the rosemary there. Olivier Filippi says he
seriously doubts it's R. Barcelona because that one gets damaged by frost
even in his trial garden and he says it's not worth photographing.
However, I've sent him a photograph of the Salcombe one and promised him
some cuttings if it isn't one he has. He has never heard of Jackman's
Prostrate, either and Burncoose have no photo of it. Filippi has asked for
cuttings of that, if I can get some and has promised us some cuttings of new
cultivars of his, in return, which is very kind.

Burncoose have also had a photo from me and I'm waiting to hear back from
them. They say the one in their car park is Jackman's Prostrate but they
have no idea of its provenance and say only that is has been around a long
time, so it's certainly possible that it's got more than one name and that
the nursery in the east of UK got it from Burncoose under that name. I hope
our photos of the Salcombe one will be on our web site soon but if anyone
wants an email pic, let me know.

Ray thinks it's possible/probable that the other rosemary I was thinking
about is the same one (the two couples are friends and neighbours) but
because it's on a much lower wall in the second garden, it runs across the
path and on down another wall, IIRC.
The one we photographed this afternoon is on a wall that is probably about
10' high in places and it hangs right down to the ground where it has been
trimmed just to touch the tarmac drive. The wall is rendered, so it isn't
rooting and sending out new plants from any cracks or joints in the wall; it
hangs in a solid curtain.

O. Filippi thinks it is close to R. Barcelona now he's seen the photos -
hard to tell from photos. He's asked for some cuttings to trial it at his
place, so I'm posting some to him tomorrow. Cottage Nursery in Lincolnshire
are no longer listing R. Jackman's Prostrate on their web site.

Pack it in Mike and give it a rest, please?

Now I found the pictures of your cruise much more interesting than
your nasty comments. Did you go to Guadaloupe or Martinique as I
shall be on both islands in April. If so, can you let me know the
name of an aurthentic French-Caribbean restaurant?

And no more nasty comments, I would rather talk to you about your
travels.

Not nasty comments at all. Just the truth :-)) Unfortunatly, some people
don't like the truth!! However, 'Owners' are a breed unto themselves :-(((

One of the Cruising newsgroups I subscribe to might be of interest to you if
you wish to deal with nice people. Give me an email address if you are
interested and I will get you on board. Got my son on board this afternoon

You mean you don't want to know what variety of dandelion you have? ;-)
This one could run and run, believe me. In the end, I can see us ending up
sending it to Wisley, or something! It's just curiosity really because it's
such a marvellous plant and so unusual. Ray used to know a couple, both
botanists, who could stand looking at one plant for half an hour or more,
arguing as to its *precise* identity and then send him a 6 page dissertation
on why it was what they'd decided it was!

I had two such people round one evening for a BBQ, I've never invited
them again, they listed every single problem with my plants, which,
according to them, were all sufferfing from something or other
including my phlox which had wireworm, I'd only heard of woodworm up
until then!

Here's a photo of this mysterious rosemary. Quite apart from what its
proper name is, it's a remarkable plant! My son's put it up for me on our
web site - ignore the bit about the car, he has a strange sense of humour at
times!

Would it have been simpler to beleive me in the first place - or at
least just thank me for some suggestions? Only too glad you're finding
what you're looking for. I only know too well the frustration of this.

It would indeed have been simpler if you had read the many sentences in
which I said that a) you might turn out to be right but b) I could not
reasonably take your word for it when you had never seen this rosemary and
c) your manner of posting and insulting and haranguing all those who will
not bow to your every word was not so alienating.

NONE of your suggestions, other than this possibility, were even faintly
like what I was looking for, so please don't start again telling us that
you're an expert on a plant you've never laid eyes on.

And finally, I have heard back from Burncoose who say that they cannot be
sure the Salcombe rosemary is the one they have. IOW, nobody is yet certain
as to what it is and may never be.

I won't start a fight again. a) you told me none of my suggestions
where remotely like what you described, b) you've never heard of
Jackman's. I told you it's the one growing in Bruncoose carpark! Now
they've told you so. From your description it sounded it.

NONE of your suggestions, other than this possibility, were even faintly

Your picture in salcombe IS Blue rain. Do you want to bait? That was
my third suggestion.

And finally, I have heard back from Burncoose who say that they cannot be

No but what they have in the car park is Jackman's and you've mislead
everybody in thinking I was talking rubbish. I want an apologie. I
want you to say that you shouldn't have said that all my suggestions
were rubbish because in the end 3 of my suggestions are still a
possibility, 1 is the right one and your picture is Blue Rain, I'm
certain.
