Might be Prunus dulcis or Prunus subhirtella autumnalis - try doing a Google
Image search for a pic of those to see if they look familiar.

I agree with Sacha, I have a lovely little compact Prunus Incisa 'Kojo No
Mai' in full flower just now. A small tree worth considering for its
flowers and autumnal leaf colours.

Could be - almonds have pink or white cherry like blossom in early
spring before the leaves. But could also be a winter flowering cherry
Prunus subhirtella autumnalis, which has more scattered small pink or
white flowers all through winter, or blackthorn (sloe) which is more of
a large bush, with white flowers.

If it's an almond, you can often find, either on the tree or under it,
last year's almonds, looking rather like small flattened green peaches
(the almond it the 'stone' of the fruit).

If you're seeing them in rough ground, they're most likely to be sloes,
in gardens probably almonds at this time of year and winter flowering
cherry in January.

Thanks to all who replied. Much appreciated and I will follow up with
looking at Google.
The odd thing with this news group is that my original message is not
displayed, only the replies.
Anyone got an explanation?

Not all news servers carry all posts efficiently, and sometimes also there
are time delays where you see the replies before the original post. FWIW, I
saw your original, and the replies. A lot of people use news.individual.net
as a news server and when I changed to them some years ago I noticed a huge
improvement in the number of posts I saw. They are not free any more, but at
only 10 Euros a year they are excellent. You can use the news reader of your
choice with them; you are not limited to Outlook Express which I see you are
currently using.

I got one last year Mike and took it to what we term in the gardening
club as 'The Top table' where we show off things currently putting on a
good show.
There were a surprising number of people who also had this shrub and all
agreed how lovely it is and the fact that autumn colour is good too.
Those that didn't have it left the meeting intending to get one very
soon!
It really is so pretty and so compact.
