writes Does anyone know of any plants, shrubs etc. that are mentioned in the bible or the gospel that are available in the UK for purchase ? If you google for "plants of the bible" you'll find several lists; you then have to decide which are reliable, as they don't agree on the identification of all of the plants. Then go to PlantFinder (http://www.rhs.org.uk/rhsplantfinder/plantfinder.asp) and see what you can find. Not all plants mentioned in the Bible are hardy in the UK, but some are. -- Stewart Robert Hinsley |

The Ark of the Covenant was made of the delightfully named shittim wood, which apparently is some type of acacia, but not one that is hardy in Britain. But perhaps you could instead plant hyssop, as in "purge me with hyssop and I shall be clean", one might say it could do the same job. The Vine of Sodom is another one you'll have to pass on, but apparently its fruit taste terrible so you aren't missing anything. Frankincense and myrrh aren't hardy either. As someone else says, mistranslations and inconsistent translations abound. For example the RV in Psalm 29 has cedar, but the NIV has terebinth - you'll only be able to grow the former. |

Greek mythology, wasn't she? A nymph, chaste and beautiful, daughter of the river Peneius and Ladon, a river god. Apollo tried to seduce her, but was rejected. He then became more forceful, and she fled, but he caught her and she cried out to Gaea for help. The earth opened beneath her and she was swallowed up, and a laurel tree sprang up at the spot. Apollo made the tree sacred to him. So whether laurels or daphnes are wrongly named, I'll leave you to decide...... -- Chris E-mail: christopher[dot]hogg[at]virgin[dot]net |
