Default Red Geranium seeds

I live in Sussex, close to the coast, and the house has a south facing wall,
painted white. A couple of years ago I bought six large bright, deep red
geraniums (or pelargoniums) which I planted into two large white flower pots
and stood these against the wall. On a sunny day the effect was beautiful.
Since then, I haven't been able to find any geraniums as good as those were
and I never made a note of the variety nor did I take any cuttings.

I'd like to grow my own from seed if, that is, I can find seeds that will
give me those deep bright red flowers. Can anyone advise me which might be
the best variety to look for and, if possible, where I might buy the seeds
from? The images on the Internet and those on the seed packets don't always
give a true idea of the colour.

Thanks in anticipation.

Regards,

John

Personally, I think P. 'Lord Bute' is a wonderful colour but it might be too
dark for you. http://www.pelargoner.nu/bilder/bastalorden.JPG
It might help you to Google for a nursery specialising in pelargoniums.

A large bright red flowered geranium we have had for about 7 or 8 years has
changed colour this year. Is this normal or is it missing spending winters in
an
office?

It might have been affected by the soil or compost it's in, light, cold
etc., I suppose. Or did you propagate it from cuttings? One of our staff
is still cringing that in propagating Pel. Mr Wren, she propagated from a
reversion and threw away the 'Mr Wren' bit by mistake. So we are now
without P. Mr Wren!

Lord Bute is one of the darkest flowers but certainly not bright red!
However when I have grown it Sacha you get an awful lot of leaves for
your money and not enough flowers!
I thought the description was of the type grown on the continent on
balconies.
Might it not be better to get a catalogue from Vernon's, in I think,
Surrey, and buy one good one or even visit. Then keep cuttings?

There's one called Crampell's Master or Paul Crampell which Vernon's
sell in their catalogue and describe as bright red, John.

I think they have a web site ...(brief few minutes searching)
yes, their website is
http://www.geraniumsuk.com

We visited the nursery some years back en masse from the gardening Club.
Very friendly and helpful.

No, not bright red but v. glamorous. ;-)

I hadn't thought of it in that way - I shall have to trot outside to have a
look!

I certainly think that's the OP's best bet.

We bought it in a garden centre that specialises in selling geraniums.
I think it doesn't like the weather we have had so far this summer.

And who can blame the poor thing!

Missed the original post.
Try these people, not for seeds though.

But as Marco says, unless you see and then buy a actual plant in
flower, you'll never be certain you get the same shade of red.

Default Red Geranium seeds

When I sent off my question, I had trouble trying to define exactly what I
meant by 'deep bright red' flowers and I realise now that it's not easy to
get the idea across, so I apologise!

I tried searching the Internet for specialist suppliers/growers of geranium
plants but so far haven't found any though I will search again.

The only seeds I have found (both in packets on the garden centre shelves
and on the Internet on-line shopping) are 'Moulin Rouge', which everyone
seems to sell here and are certainly a strong red but I can't really tell
the brightness of these from the images. I want something that will really
stand out against the white background.

I shall look at Vernon's (thanks Janet) and will keep searching for plants
from which I can take cuttings as has been suggested and as I should have
done with the plants I bought about ten years ago or, perhaps, thinking
about it even fifteen years ago!.

Anyway, thanks to all for your emails and help.

Regards,

John

You ought to look in France - the brightest Pelargonium x hortorum
I've seen! There's Christian Rouge, Balle de Feu and many many more
very bright red. Check links below and any problems let me know (I
speak the language ;o) I could even bring some back for you if you
want. Just email me.

I have a nice "multibloom" red which I did NOT from from seed but I
notice that Chiltern Seeds appear to be offering them - see:

Thanks to all who answered my question. I've read each one and made copious
notes (honsetly!).

However, I took a walk down the garden, a couple of days ago (in between
the bouts of extremely heavy rain that we in the South of
England have learned to call summer this year! ) and there, blooming, in a
large flower-pot, was exactly what I was looking for! My wife apparently
took cuttings from a plant she got from somewhere and it's been there for a
couple of winters now! I must learn to open my eyes! I can only suppose that
when I've seen it, it's not been flowering and when it has been flowering,
I've not noticed it among all the other flowers (on the other hand it could
be old age, senile decay, and poor eyesight!)

Anyway, I took my wife to a garden centre for a coffee and just a look and
there we found pots upon pots of the same geranium, in full bloom - so
bought two! They were just identified as "Zonal" geraniums - no other name
was given so I still don't know the variety.

I now have enough material for plenty of cuttings! The winters, though,
here, in this part of Sussex have been so mild of recent years that I tend
to leave my geraniums outside all winter. The biggest danger now is the
amount of rain we get and not the cold.

I apologise to those people, further north, who have really had such
dreadful floods, for talking about our heavy rainfall, here in the South.
Yes we have had flooding but nothing like they have had. I used to live in
Shropshire, on the banks of the Severn, and we were flooded twice so I have
some experience. I remember that, because we lived in a steep sided valley,
I had to climb through the bathroom window at the back of the house, across
the roof of the coal-house to reach the top level of our back garden and,
from there, make my way through the side streets, along the valley side to
get to school!

Thanks again for all your replies. I've tried to answer each one but if I
missed anyone, I apologise, and if you would like an response/answer from
me, please email again.

Regards and thanks to all,

John

I'm really pleased that you found it and that you have a wife with such
foresight! ;-) I saw a truly beautiful one the other day in the nursery,
growing in a pot of our own but forgot to ask Ray what it is. I thought of
you because it's a wonderful clear red. I'll try to remember to ask him the
name.
