Alas poor Fred, for he is gone.
His face we'll see no more.
For what he thought was H2O
Was H2SO4.

Johnny, finding life a bore, drank some H2SO4
Johnny's father, an M.D., gave him CaCO3
Now he's neutralized, it's true,
But he's full of CO2

Quoted in Holmyard's excellent chemistry book, a copy of which I read
avidly when a child.

Ok, ok, you were there presumably, but a far cry from triphorine,
paraquat, resmesthrin, atrazine etc... and eventually glyphosate. I've
never been too fond of h2g2 gardens myself.

or less, under the form of burnt wood and volcano rocks that they

All "burning" is oxidisation.

and the quantities?

Burn sulphur and you get sulphur dioxide (SO2), add to water and you get
sulphuric acid (H2SO4). This was still true 4000 years ago.
