Default Dwarf rhubarb? Why?

In my garden I have a row of rhubarb plants. They all went in pretty
much at the same time. Some have turned into large plants, not just
tall but with loads of crowns - so much so that they will have to be
split this autumn.

Some, on the other hand, have gone pygmy. The leaves and stems are
maybe 20 cm long and spindly. The crowns do seem to be broadening out
tho', ie there are quite a few new crowns.

I'm puzzled why some plants, all from the same stock and all in the
same garden should develop so differently. Anyone got any ideas
please?

Thanks

Merlin
