You can grow carrots in vertical plastic drain pipes (as seen in a
programme
about people growing giant vegetables).

Wouldn't you need hundreds or drainpipes?

How many 5 metre long carrots were you thinking of growing? )

Oh, I misunderstood. I thought you meant growing just normal everyday
carrots in them! I imagined growing my Early Nantes in drainpipes but
thought that would be going over the top!!

Talking of drainpipes - I take it that you all know about the methos using
guttering to plant seeds in, then moving the seedings to a guttering shaped
trench by sliding them out. Easier than transplanting where you might be
short of space.

The message
from Martin contains these words:

I stayed with a group of colleagues in a hotel in Antwerp once. We had
rooms on
the top floor. An American veteran WWII pilot in the group said the
noise the
mosquitoes made climbing to his altitude reminded him of Japanese aircraft
positioning themselves for dive bombing. There was no sign of carrot fly.

They're not big enough to carry bombs.

No, they grow downwards like normal carrots.

Ideal for cauliflowers - which should not be uprooted for transplant.

(Or you tend to get butto-sized curds.)

Grow them under a fleece cover and keep it on until you harvest.

The problem with that is that I usually harvest just a few each day -
and I suppose the flies would get in during that time, wouldn't they?
(Also - what about weeding?)

Lift the fleece, weed or harvest and replace it asap. I can't see
you'd get many in in that time! It works for me.

Try this link, I got 3m by 50m for £50 delivered to my door and I was free
of carrot fly last year, as well as cabbage maggot, caterpillars etc.
There was enough to cover everything at risk on my allotement.
