Default Mower and mulching.

Some mowers have grass boxes and some have a 'mulching system' and no box.

What exactly is a mulching system and could I easily convert my existing
petrol rotary mower to a mulcher.

My ride-on mower (36" twin-blades) was 'converted' by means of a speclai
plastic 'bung' which fits up the tube that would normally deliver cut
grass to the collector bins.

The bung seems to divert the cut grass back into the twin blades, where
it's minced still finer, and then eventually drops out onto the lawn...

It works best on well-dry grass - but having the mulching device rather
than the collector means I don't have to faff about emptying the grass
bins and unblocking the collector chute. Have been in 'mulching mode'
for the last 18 months and it doesn't seem to have done the lawn any harm.

You#d need to ask your friendly local mower specialist if such a device
is suitable for your particlular mower...

When you're in the South-West of Ireland, where the grass needs mowing
11 months of the year / at least 3 times per month - anything thak makes
it easier & faster has to be good !

Hope this helps

They do indeed work (I used one in Cork for years) and you save a lot
of time with piles of clippings.
You may end up having a less that perfect lawn if you are into fancy
lawns but for mere normal garden grass areas, they work great.
Ironically, these days (in Dublin) we collect the clippings for
compost.

I have a mower with mulching capacity which I never use. I much
prefer to collect the clippings in the bag/box, and use them to mulch
my ornamental and veg patches. I can never get enough of the stuff,
and am planning to sweet talk the neighbour into contributing his
clippings too - though I suspect he too composts them.

Default Mower and mulching.

g'day mark,

for me mate it is one or the other.

i have seen mowers that are supposed to be convertable to a mulching
mower by the addition of a cover or sorts, just doesn't do the job
properly, because at the end of the day the mower and the cutting
system are designed to cut and catch grass.

if you are going to mulch the lawn with clip as you cut then you need
to cut the lawn as high as possible for me that is 1 notch below max'
height. we have a rear catcher mower and we leave the clip on raking
any over burden or sweeping it around to spread it, this has worked
well for us for a long time now.

when you start doing this you may need to mow that extra couple times
or more often through the growing season this to minimise overburden.

now back to purpose built mulching mowers, flymo's nearly come into
this category, but the one i am familiar with was bolens mowers made a
good purpose built machine not sure if they still do but maybe someone
does.

would doubt that if the mulching option was not an accessory option
with your mower that there is going to be any adaption for you.

My machine (Hayter 10/30) claims to do both but came without the mulching
adapter. For most of the year I use the collector and the clippings make
good compost. For the first few cuts after the lawns have been fed and
weed/moss treated I like to mulch so made my own adapter as in
http://share.ovi.com/media/Muddymike...uddymike.10032
The idea being that the clippings can't escape from the deck up the
discharge chute and therefore get chopped up a lot more by the blade and
finally fall into the grass. It does work but does not leave the lawns as
tidy as when using the collector. Quite a lot of clippings are left on the
surface which do get trodden onto the paths and even into the house. The
main downside of mulching is that I can't cut as fast and the grass needs to
be really dry or else the deck clogs up. When it clogs up it leaves great
soggy clumps of cuttings and sometimes damages the turf. I don't believe
this is anything to do with the mulching plate being home made as it is all
but identical to the gen part.

Having duly considered all the replies, for which I say thank you, I think
I'll give it a miss. I'll carry on collecting the grass.
