Thinking along same lines as vegegrower in his post, would a butane weed
flame gun have any effect on Mares Tail?

I think the flame gun would kill the tops but not the roots. It will
just keep on coming up.
Good luck!

Perhaps a nice garnish for a bit of salmon?

I covered it for 3 years with woven plastic membrane and it has come
back as strong as ever. I think the roots are too tough.

The beds in use all have it even though I take it out by hand twice
per year!

The good thing is that if you do disturb the roots, it really sets it
back and it takes a while to get going again. That makes it easy to
remove in a dug bed.

There was one instance of it growing down to hundreds of feet (in a
surface mine in Australia) so I'm guessing it has the upper hand
unless you physically remove all traces!

I think you need to take it out much more often than that. Basically
remove all green growth whenever you see it. I got rid of a small patch
that way. And it doesn't grow in a well-mown lawn

Hi Kay,

I do try to have a go at it every time I weed the veggy beds but it
still manages to evade me and pop up all over the place. I don't mind
the hand weeding. Kind of therapeutic even if frustrating at times. At
either end of the season I have a very thorough go at it.

There was one bed where I was so completely fed up with it that I went
through the entire mass of soil down to about 18 inches and took out
every weed by hand. I carefully ran all of the soil through my fingers
(I do mean all the soil) and removed about 30 litres of weed roots of
couch and marestail (filling a 30 litre bag) in what I thought was a
well tended bed - about 8' by 4'.

It all seems a bit OTT and obsessive but I think it's good to know
your enemy! I found out that when couch grass roots are starved and
matted together they are very difficult to tell apart from a starved,
matted marestail root system. They are thin, black and brittle. It's
only when they are swollen and growing or have sprouts on that you can
easily tell them apart. The marestail with it's periodic nodes and the
couchgrass with its brittle, fat, white shoots are public enemy number
one on my allotment (in Burbage, Leics.)

They are just too deep. However, their reserves of energy are not infinite.

Take it out as it appears!

I knew someone who claimed to have defeated mares tail with SBK. Took a few
years though.

A liquid systemic brushwood killer. The plant takes it in through the
leaves, so don't spray just before rain.

We used a lot of it when we had our last house with a very large and some
overgrown garden.

Some plants with shiny leaves need to have an adhering agent mixed into the
SBK, we used a small amount of paraffin
