Update; Large flowered hibiscue
Several of us bought some Large Flowered Hibiscus plants earlier this
year. Two of my three have grown to about 3 feet high, but no sign of flowers. Has anyone else had any success? One plant, though treated exactly the same, has shown no sign of growth. Pam in Bristol |

Though mine are in their second year (didn't flower in first either). |

I took 2 grandchildren to the Blue Reef Aquarium in Bristol last week. There's also a tropical area with planting under glass. I saw a few very similar plants not much bigger than mine, but with a few flowers. I guess they need patience and heat! Pam in Bristol |

This year they're finally showing some flower buds. -- Stewart Robert Hinsley |

One plant, though treated exactly the same, has shown no sign of growth. Three roots bought from T & M and planted and no plants at all. One root I looked at last week as I wanted to plant something else there seemed exactly as I planted it but one dug up by the cat last month was mostly rotten. Probably should have planted them in pots and kept them in the greenhouse with bottom heat but they said they could be planted straight in the ground. Might try some seeds of H. moschata & H. moscheutos next year and see how they do. -- Regards Bob Hobden W.of London. UK |

Bought 4 last year from T&M planted individually in 9" pots in the greenhouse. Only one made any growth and no sign of flowers. The other 3 are still in 9" pots this year and still no sign of growth. This one seems a bit of a 'dead duck'. Phil |

There were 4 but one didn't wake up. I habitually record any TV programme from which I buy something "in case" and I've just played the recording of the presentation of the Hibiscus. Clear statements - "tough as old boots" "can be grown in the ground or in tubs" "no need to bring in in winter" "they'll grow three feet tall this year and more next year" "you'll have up to 60 dinner plate size flowers this year and up to 100 next year" I think that as so many apparently have no results, it might be worth asking QVC (in my case) or T&M to do something about it. I'll contact QVC Customer Services and let you know how I get on. |

Back to the hibiscus. Although mine died too, it did actually flower first - I bought it as a potted plant with an open flower and several buds. Only gave me about 3 flowers though. |

I'm trying to grow on a couple of Hibiscus shoots which seem to be offshoots from the roots of an established plants. They are both in pots with HomeBase peat free compost. The tiny one seems to be growing reasonably well (although no sign of flowers) but the larger one is struggling; it dropped its leaves but is growing them back again slowly. Both seem to need an inordinate amout of water to survive. They are both sitting outside with their pots in water and seem to like it that way. -- No plan survives contact with the enemy. David, do you mean suckers from the large flowered Hibiscus or from H. syriacus? From what I understand the large flowered ones have some bog or swamp type plants in their makeup. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hibiscus_moscheutos Which would explain your sucker's propensity for water. -- Regards Bob Hobden W.of London.
