Thanks for the info, my Magnolia set seed for the first time this
year, (well its the first time I have seen seed) but then it is only a
youngster at 35 years old.

Are you a 2012 Gamemaker too?

I can only speak of M. stellata.

This is very easy to germinate. I just sow it as soon as the seed heads
split and show the ripe seed. Just put it about a cm deep in good
compost (JI or any good compost), and leave out over winter. IME it
germinates well in the spring.

From that I gather they need stratification before germination and am I to
assume those instructions are for all Magnolia species including the Chinese
ones.
The one I collected seed from was M sargentiana robusta. much too big for my
garden but I'd like to give it a go.
