Default elm sapling giveaway

In Gardens Illustrated (yes i know very expensive but such lovely
pictures and some really good articles so i share the subscription with
2 others)

it says that there is a Great British Elm Experiment where the charity
Conservation Foundation is offering saplings micro propagated from elms
that seem to have withstood the attack from the elm beetle.

They want Elm guardians who will monitor and care for the little
saplings. Recording progress at
www.conservationfoundation.co.uk/elms

The magazine has a raffle/giveaway of 5 elm saplings (worth 26.45 each)

Schools and community groups are eligible for free saplings and anyone
else can buy one

website is
www.conservationfoundation.co.uk/elms

or

You can email

Seems like a nice Christmas present!

I've passed that on to a neighbour who is helping out with a garden and
allotment at a school for special needs children.
Thanks for the heads up.

Maybe that's from the date it was first discovered in the UK. I certainly
remember the fuss about Dutch Elm Disease which I would date roughly to
the early 70's, 40 years ago.

Wikipedia:

"Circa 1967, a new, far more virulent strain arrived in Britain on a
shipment of rock elm U. thomasii logs from North America, and this strain
proved both highly contagious and lethal to European elms; more than 25
million trees have died in the UK alone. The disease is still migrating
northwards through Scotland, reaching Edinburgh in the late 1970s, and
Inverness in 2006. By 1990, very few mature elms were left in Britain or
much of continental Europe. "

I would have said more nearer 1970 that the final ones succumbed

We had elms in our hedges in 1988 that grew back so long as you cut
them to hedge hight, as advised by the Forestry Commission.

Yes but some of us remember when elms were just about the biggest trees
around.

They had such an iconic outline didn't they? Even in winter and they
didn't drop blinking saplings all over the shop like sycamore and ash!

Golden elm is a lovely tree it seems to carry it's own sunshine and gets
to quite a height so presumably impervious to the beetle?

When I was teaching in the early 70's we had an avenue of around 16 old
and healthy Elms.
I would have thought it was around 50 years ago when Dutch Elm Disease
first showed up in the UK
