Default question about soot

I have just swept my chimney and have a rather
large bag of soot.
When I was a lad I heard about people using soot
on there gardens and allotments.
Is this still a good thing to do and if so how should it
be used ??
I don't want to dump it if it can be of use on the allotment.

Your thoughts would be appreciated.

Wally
