Americans are stupid. Fruits hang on things, vegetables are in or on
the ground. And if you care to look up a proper website in the UK, not
some backwards way first country, you'll find there is also a technical
botanical reason a tomato is a fruit, to do with containing seeds. Same
goes for beans.

Tomatoes (note the 'e') are a fruit, but just don't put them in a fruit
salad!

I worked with a Dutch guy who sprinkled sugar on tomatoes before eating them as
a dessert. The rest of his packed lunch was weird too. Even stranger was that he
brought a packed lunch and a thermos of coffee to work everyday, when we had a
very good restaurant quality food canteen, where meals were sold for the cost of
the materials

The Dutch also sprinkle chocolate "hundreds and thousands" on
buttered bread. I hate to say it, but it is quite palatable.

But then I think brussel sprout sarnies are good too.

What's wrong with that? Everything tastes better with sugar.

The rest of his packed lunch was weird too. Even stranger was that he

I've never known a work canteen supply anything at a reasonable price or quality, and definitely not both at once.

And what is the point of the e?

Look in your dictionary.

Since when did a dictionary have points?

Why not? I do.

"Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit, wisdom is not putting it
in a fruit salad".

A fruit salad contains fruit, so I'll put tomatos in it if I want.

Because people use them as a vegetable.
I for one don't want Tomato with custard as a desert even if it is a fruit.

LOL

A good answer.

Our local Dutch supermarket chain has tinned tomatoes in the section with
Italian food.

Which leads us to the question of whether tomato ketchup belongs in the fruit
department :-)

Morrisons here has a "World Foods" isle. What they mean is "foreign stuff".

I just ask where the "non-world" food comes from - and
get a predictably blank look.

But we are making a fundamental mistake: applying logic and
reasoning to marketing.

Similarly once, long ago, I asked a bookstore (Heffers!)
manager what was the distinction between "fiction" and
"literature", and how I should predict which section
contained any particular book.

He was somewhat bemused by the question, and admitted
he didn't know.

Of course I see them as English. I also think spaghetti should not be a World food. World foods should be things that most English do not eat.
