Default Ants killing my tree :o(

Hi

I have a smallish (about 4' high) 3 year old Flowering Cherry tree and the
ants are devastating it. The main leaves aren't too bad but the new ones
are covered in ants and all curled up and dying. How can I stop this?
There are plenty of other trees (Willows, Maples, Birch, Mountain Ash and
more flowering cherry) close by yet none of these are affected. Why are
they picking on this one and how can I help it out? Thanks.

'Jaqy',

Inspect one of the leaves carefully to establish whether or not the ants
are merely collecting aphids from off the attacked leaves. Should that
be the case you will need to treat the aphids.

If the ants are causing the problem, and I doubt it, they can be
discouraged by placing ant powder around the base of the tree or an
impregnated band around the trunk of the tree. Try and find their nest.

It is not the ants. They are merely following the aphids that will
be causing the trouble. Get rid of the aphids and the ants will go.

Thank you for these replies. You are both correct, it's aphids!! I'll get
on to treating them straight away. Thanks again.
