Does anyone knows when a watermelon is ripe to eat?
What are the signs ?
I grow them in my greenhouse for the first time and I have
two big melons (about 30 cm diameter) and two little ones.

I have never grown any but when I buy them in the shops I press both thumbs
at the stalk end and if it gives a bit it is usually ripe

Tracey got most of them. I have grown them for years and have found that no
matter how well you get at running these tests, you are going to pick one
too soon. I listed a couple extra below.

I ALSO WAIT UNTIL THE SMALL LEAF AT THE BASE OF THE TENDRIL HAD TURNED
BROWN.

I PICK THE MELON OFF THE GROUND AND HOLD IT WITH ONE HAND AND SLAP IT WITH
THE OTHER. IF THE VIBRATION FROM THE SLAP GOES ALL THE WAY THROUGH THE
MELON AND CAN BE FELT BY THE HAND HOLDING THE MELON, IT IS A GOOD SIGN IT IS
RIPE.

DEPENDS ON THE COLOR OF THE MELON YOU ARE GROWING. SOME ARE VERY YELLOW,
SOME ARE WHITE.

DONT GET IN A HURRY. MOST MELONS WILL STAY GOOD ON THE VINE FOR OVER A WEEK
AFTER THEY ARE RIPE.
