Default berberis thunbergii eaten - rabbits?

We have a group of 5 berberis thunbergii, (mostly) about 3 ft high (with
Cerithe 'purpurescans' filling the gaps). One of them has been reduced to
about 9 - 12 inches and another has been partially butchered.

We get the occasional rabbit in the graden but I thought that prickly plants
were safe from attack.

Any ideas?

John
