Default Tackling Viburnum suckers

After performing fairly major surgery to a Viburnum tinus, we've seen it
assert its survival instinct by sending a crop of suckers across the back
lawn. What is the best way to tackle these, and prevent recurrence?

Thanks in advance for any advice.
