NME - winXP crashed every time I tried to access the LAN here so I wiped
it and installed w98se - no prob's

Probably because you have no clue what you're doing or your machine isn't
suited to it.

That particular m/c was sold with XP - in 2001.

you'll be someone's bitch
soon enough if you stay connected for long enough!

I guess I'd be worried if I understood you.

Probably because you have no clue what you're doing or your machine isn't
suited to it. That's about the most pathetic defence of Win98 I've ever
heard! Keep your bug-ridden out of date software, you'll be someone's

bitch
soon enough if you stay connected for long enough!

Im not a MS fan at all, but XP is rock solid compared to anything else
they've ever released. Any other opinion on this matter is based on
singular (and therefore irrelevant) "bad" experiences.

Allegedly the code base is very close to Win2K now - which is also pretty
solid.

The vulnerability and patch don't apply to Windows 98 and some other old
versions of Windows.

Windows 286?

The message
from "Franz Heymann" contains these words:

I would rather rely on Norton to fight virus attacks than rely on Microsoft.

Whatever you do then, don't do a reformat. You'll lose your 'licence'
which is (probably) hidden somewhere in the registry.

No amount of pleading, threatening, e-mailing Symantec will result in
your AV program working again. Ever.

Ah, well, I am running Windows 98 and have no intention of upgrading.
Do you really mean that later versions have newly introduced vulnerabilities
which did not exist on the older versions?

Oh yes. With each new version, new and exciting holes for virus writers
and hackers to exploit!

Exciting new opportunities to grapple with denial of service, virus
attacks, spyware etc. Life is fun! Don't miss out!

I wouldn't touch Symantec with *YOUR* bargepole.

The message

It's not that difficult to install SuSe Linux, the problems come if
you want to run Linux and WinXP on the same PC, when WinXp is already
installed.

No problem. Just get a caddy and you have (virtually) two machines.
Otherwise, XP will write all over your Linux partitions.

The following message from Microsoft appeared in Demon announce today:

It was sent out as one of M$'s official Security Bulletins a few days

Note that M$ Security Bulletins are PGP signed and never include an
executable, they always provide a pointer to a page on a M$ site from
where the update can be downloaded.

However, forgeries which seem genuine point to spurious websites.

of course, what else are new versions for?

well they don't crash for a start.

Of course: systems which crash reduce opportunities for attacks on them.

One has to be careful with URLs. For example

is not a MicroSoft URL. (In most cases everything before the @-sign can
be ignored; in some cases it has meaning to the site given after the
@-sign.)

There's a fraud going the rounds of spam at the moment with the URL

www.barclays.co.uklots of spaces@web site that's been taken down

The lots of spaces means that one doesn't see the rest of the URL.

Nuts. I've never updated Win 98 or 2000 since they were bright shiny new
in '98 and 2000 respectively, and I have only had a month's trial of an
AV program in seven years or so on the net.

I have received countless virii and worms, trojans etc in e-mail, and
never been infected with one of them.

However, the first things to be uninstalled from the above OSs were
Outlurk, Outpuke Depress and IE.

Here we go again with the "my granny smoked till she was 102 and never got
cancer" argument. If you've never updated them you're sticking your head in
the sand and quite frankly very foolish.

I have received countless virii and worms, trojans etc in e-mail, and

How the hell would you know!? Especially with trojans, what makes you think
you cold pick it up with a scanner? Maybe some lame known trojan - anyway,
AV software is rubbish at picking up trojans, something like The Cleaner
does far better. BTW, look up the meaning of a worm - they are self
replicating, not spread by email like a virus.

However, the first things to be uninstalled from the above OSs were
Outlurk, Outpuke Depress and IE.

Which is fine, you've got rid of a lot of the low hanging fruit. However
many of the recent vulnerabilities are in Windows components, not the
internet applications. You would never know if someone compromised your
machine (ie. not a script or a worm) and hid their tracks. You make this
extremely easy by not bothering to update your software.
