Cheap and interesting seeds in Lidl
My local Lidl has a rack of seeds again.
Their range for flowers and vegetables might be described as "eclectic" and includes: - TWO varieties of yellow dwarf french bean - Kohl Rabi "Superschmelz" which (it is alleged) can grow to 10Kg and - Scorzonera - At least one variety of most common vegetables - some I've seen recommended, others I can find no reference to! - Sunflower, Marigold, dianthus, etc. - Herbs Packets are 29p or 49p Steve Harris - Cheltenham - Real address steve AT netservs DOT com A useful bit of gardening software at http://www.netservs.com/garden/ |

Cheap and interesting seeds in Lidl

My local Lidl has a rack of seeds again. Packets are 29p or 49p bargain Although a friend last year bought some squash seeds from lidl last year. The seeds germinated well and i got a few plants. The plants grew well and flowered BUT the flowers seemed to open for only a very brief period of the day and none of them became fertilised. I do not lack buzzy insects because my courgettes (whose flowers similarly were only open for a short time early in the day) all fruited well. I found out later that my friend got no squash harvest from her plants either. could that have something to do with the quality of the seed??? sarah a |

Possible, I suppose. The main risk I see with this source is that the seeds appear to be intended for sale in various parts of Europe including Spain and the UK. Some of them may have been bred and/or designed for warmer places. (I notice that the Chilterns catalogue points out that some of their tomato sees are from Essex and allege that some direct competitors source from S Europe and hint that they're inferior. I don't care where Wilkinsons got my 49p packet of Gardeners Delight. They are so stunning, I dread buying another packet anywhere in case I'm disappointed!)
