Question Need advice on what tree to grow in a tub!!

Hi All,
We're in desperate need of some help. Until recently, we had a beautiful 10ft tree in our garden, which we inherited when we moved in. Following a LOT of TLC,sadly it finally succumbed to a very strong wind and gave up the ghost! Spooky had to take it down as it was unsavable!!
Now we're left with a sizable dent in our border, and the garden is 200ft in length, so it REALLY looks bleak there now.
Our problem could be resolved by simply planting another tree in its place, but we've now decided to try and grow a tree in a tub or pot, so we can take it with us when we move.
Any ideas on what we could plant up? That side of our garden is planted in oranges and yellows, so a tree with either Orange/Yellow flowers would be great! I've tried all the plant finders I can think of, but to no avail!
Really would very much appreciate any ideas.

ok, 1) where do you live, to have 200' of garden cos I want to move there
8-)

2) I'd go for Acers. I have several in various pots, an A palmatum
'osakazuki (flame red in autumn, burgundy at bud burst), an A. Palmatum
'butterfly' (pink and white dual variegated), and an A shirasawenum
(fanlike bright green leaves). The Osakazuki has arguably the brightest
autumn foliage of all acers, and I've had mine 4 years in a 15" clay pot.
It's now about 3' tall, and I suspect this year it may outgrow the pot (in
which case another one inherits the pot and I go find a bigger one!) I
think they will grow to 24' if in open ground. Pots do tend to bonsai them
a bit :-)
The Butterfly is more upright, like a funnel in shape, and the shirasawenum
is gorgeous but they don't get terribly big.

There are loads of websites with acers, listing varieties. I'm sure you can
find one with golden leaves.

eg
Acer circinatum - Vine Maple 15'. (-30°f, USDA Zones 4-8). This native of
the Pacific Northwest grows as a graceful, open, often vine-like tree under
a canopy of large conifers in its native habitat. When grown in the open,
it is bushier with straight stems. Famous for its scarlet show of autumn
color in the western forests, Vine Maples can display more yellow at lower
elevations! Medium sized leaves are orbicular with 7 lobes.

see http://www.greergardens.com/acers.htm for lists of the things. If you
can find one whose description sounds promising, then the RHS plantfinder
should be able to help find one over this side of the pond

I had a photinia ( red robin ) which did very well in a pot - about 6ft high
so manageable and I brought it with me when I moved house. The flowers are
white which isn't what you want, but the leaves are red so it might fit in
anyway.

Default Need advice on what tree to grow in a tub!!

Really depends when you are going to move, a year or so is no problem, but
10 years then forget it.

Why yellow flowers?
Why not Robinia psudoacacia "Frisia" good yellow foliage, should come at a
reasonable height but be OK in a tub for a year or 2.

Hello Debsy'n'Spooky,
There are a few yellow-flowered trees. Not all are easy to obtain, so
you'll need to do some research.
Caragana arborescens (Pea Tree): yellow pea-like flwrs, May. 12' high.
Koelreuteria paniculata (Pride of India): tiny yllw flwrs in panicles, July
and August. 20' high.
Laburnum watereri 'Vossii' (+other spp. and vars.) (Golden Rain):
yllw pea-flwrd tassels, May or June. 15' high.
Sophora microphylla: drooping clusters of yllw flwrs in May. Small tree.
Sophora tetraptera 'Grandiflora': drooping branches of tubular yllw flwrs in
May. Small tree.
(Source: Dr. Hessayon's Expert Guide to Trees and Shrubs.
The Hillier Colour Dictionary of Trees and Shrubs).
Another option (since you're moving) would be to grow a yellow-flowered
climber/creeper up an obelisk or canes. Such as:
Eccremocarpus scaber 'Aureus'
Tropaeolum peregrinum
Tropaeolum majus, yellow/orange forms
Thunbergia alata
Clematis and Lonicera - any of the yellow flowered clematis or honeysuckles.
Also consider Rosa 'Golden Showers', or similar.
Hope this helps.

Forsythia? Don't know if it will grow in a tub, though, but mine grew pretty
fast, and in the spring it's an explosion of yellow!
