Default greetings and mailorder question

Hello urg'ers,

Thought I'd introduce myself first. I've been lurking urg for a year or so and
am continually impressed by your knowledge and passion for gardening.
It would be nice if the noise level were a bit lower, though!

I am currently living at our restored farm in Normandy, in the "bocage" or
wooded area of the Orne department, within the confines of the Regional
Park "Normandie-Maine." The earth here is poor and rocky, quite acidic
(there are peat bogs on the property), quite shallow with a clay base.

We are surrounded by woods, and on a hill crest, so that the weather tends
to be 2-5 degrees cooler than the general area.

In spite of this I've been trying to make a nice garden in a fenced lawn of
about a hectare (2.5 acres) with some success. However, I find that
many plants or cultivars are simply unavailable in France -- at least
I've had no luck finding them. Therefore I've decided to resort to mail
order from the uk.

The question is, has anyone had good or bad experiences with a particular
nursery? I've dealt with Ken Muir before with mixed results, although I think
it was more an issue of bare root format than plant quality... Anyway, trying
to avoid mistakes, so all help appreciated. My thanks in advance!

I'm particularly looking at a Holodiscus Discolor, Cornus Kousa "Satomi",
Cornus alternifolia 'Argentea'. I see from the rhs that Chris Pattison has these,
has anyone dealt with him?

Again TIA,

-E
