I think we're committed to leaving the plants in situ now, if only to
answer the question. Give it a couple of weeks and there should be some
leaves fully out, which might give more clues...

My Cornus Alba does indeed fork, but not the first year. It puts out long
straight stems, then the ones I don't lop off fork.

Anyway the OP will know if it's a dogwood soon enough, when the
flowers come in...

My Cornus Alba does indeed fork, but not the first year. It puts out long
straight stems, then the ones I don't lop off fork.

Anyway the OP will know if it's a dogwood soon enough, when the
flowers come in...

No - some the hybrid berries (tay, sun, logan) have red stems, and have
larger fruit than wineberry, so I'd expect it to be one of these.
Except, of course, it isn't spiny.
