Good source to buy Irises?
I am in the process of sourcing some plants for a new 6m x 1.5 m perennial garden in my back garden. I would like to feature several plantings of “interesting” iris species, but my local nurseries seem sadly lacking in any choice. Is it the time of year?
I would be very grateful for any on-line or catalogue sources you may know of that might have a selection to chose from. With thanks David |

To a certain extent it is, specialist Iris (Flag?) nurseries tend to sell their plants "bare root" about 6 weeks after they have flowered which is the time they should be moved, dug up and split, etc so they have time to establish some roots before winter. So your biggest specialist choice will not be available until about August. I would be very grateful for any on-line or catalogue sources you may know of that might have a selection to chose from. Take a look at.... http://www.kelways.co.uk/ http://www.croftway.co.uk/ I know one Urgler living in France had a dispute with this one but my friends and I have been buying irises for years from them without problems. They also allow you into their field when they are in flower to see them and pre-order what you want. A pleasant day out especially if you take a picnic. (don't get carried away and buy too many) :-) http://www.broadleighbulbs.co.uk/misc/1/irisorder.htm Have some dwarf irises and others. There are also some excellent specialists in France but I've lost their URL's. One tip, if you do buy bare root, pot them up using your normal multipurpose compost until about now then plant out, you will get a better stronger plant that way and won't lose any over the winter. -- Regards Bob Use a useful Screen Saver... http://setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/ and find intelligent life amongst the stars |

The message m
from Buddman contains these words: I am in the process of sourcing some plants for a new 6m x 1.5 m perennial garden in my back garden. I have a young forest of Iris foetidissima seedlings, or as many seeds as you might want. Very easy to germinate, but you need patience as they take about a year. -- Rusty Open the creaking gate to make a horrid.squeak, then lower the foobar. http://www.users.zetnet.co.uk/hi-fi/ |

Bob
Thanks for the links - they look like great sources. I live in West London and visiting these nurseries should be a possibility ti view the plants directly. |
