Lost my Toms!
Damn!
First garden after 4 years of moving around in flats. 12 beautiful outdoor tomatoes ripped out by the wind. No time to start again this year...... ( Les ( Bugger! ( Les ( Bugger! Sometimes little things mean a lot. ) Not too late - stick 'em back in - they will often recover. I even plant side-shoots removed from cordon-grown gardeners delight and they manage to root and give a few late fruits. |

Lost my Toms!
Gutted too!
Lost my only courgette, didn't realise it could be affected by wind, being such a low-lying plant. Is there any point in sowing any more seeds now? (I live in the south) Ros Damn! You can plant them deeper than before (the stems will quickly root); give them a good stake and deep watering (preferably with diluted comfrey tea, manure water, or worm wee). Janet. |

Janet. I have heard of the first two but what is "worm wee"? That is a new one on me. Another good tonic is just filling a 5 gallon plastic bucket with grass clippings and water with a couple of drops of detergent to retard mosquitoes and letting it work for a week. Pour off juice and refill. |

Janet. I have heard of the first two but what is "worm wee"? That is a new one on me. It's the copious juice that collects in the bottom of my worm barrel. I run it off from the tap, store it in 2-litre plastic milk bottles, and use it diluted as a plant feed and tonic. (Dilution..about 2 cups in 2 gallons). Janet. |

( Les ( Bugger! Sometimes little things mean a lot. ) Have a look round the sheds and nurseries - probably still some pot grown toms around. This time of year they will take off very quickly and you will at least get some fruit. Also enquire around allotments etc.becaue ther are probably a few people (like me) who sowed too many tomato seeds but couldn't bear to throw away perfectly good tomato plants. I have given away as many as I can and still expect to be over faced by the amount of tomatoes I get. Cheers Dave R |

People will be pinching out side shoots and if any of your friends have left theirs to get a bit too long, 5 or 6 inches, they root very quickly in water. Worth a try! Pam in Bristol |

Pam in Bristol Thanks everyone, just been out and rescued what I can using many of your tips. I now have 10 plants in varying stages of recovery. I've filled the two empty places with some small pepper plants that were struggling in a pot. Lets hope for a loooooooooong summer, looking forward to reaching out of the kitchen window to pick cherry toms ( and now peppers ) off the plant! It's easy and they produce a few when the others are exhausted. Doug. ****** |
