Thinking Caps On
I'm stuck on two plant quiz questions (no prizes, it's just for fun). Any
ideas? Tipple for a fostered bird (10 letters) Light hearted caper & sir gained it (8 letters) Up to now, the other answers have all been common names of plants. |

The common name for one is canary creeper and I think there was a 18th c (?) drink called Canary. Cuckoopint fits the bill perfectly, and Larkspur is definitely correct (a knight gains his spurs). Hurrah!! |

Tipple for a fostered bird (10 letters) Cuckoopint? Sounds right - I was trying to be far too clever! Light hearted caper & sir gained it (8 letters) Larkspur? I recon this is an anargam of the last 2 words 'gained it' I think Larkspur is right, because a 'lark' is a caper and sirs (knights) gained their spurs. -- Sacha (remove the weeds after garden to email me) |

I recon this is an anargam of the last 2 words 'gained it' You may be right, but a 'lark' can mean a 'light hearted caper' and a 'sir' is a knight - when a person was knighted, he was said to have 'won his spurs', 'it' implies singular, hence 'spur'. Larkspur is the common name for plants of genus consolida, so the answer fits the pattern. |

Light hearted caper & sir gained it (8 letters) Up to now, the other answers have all been common names of plants. Think this will be an anagram of caper & sir, but can't yet work it out. Mike |

I use a hand-held Oxford "Concise Thesaurus" and please do not say I am cheating, I don't see it that way. I see it as a learning/teaching device, just like at school where the Teacher asks you a question and you don't know the answer. In the event you are told the answer and thus your vocabulary is enhanced. I consider that leaving the problem unanswered is not good for you because you suffer frustration. Given the answer, it keeps you calm and increases your word power because you remember it. And that's my excuse and |I am sticking to it. I am hopeless at those complicated cryptic crosswords. I have tried hard but I just haven't got the sneaky brain required to cope with it. I don't do too badly with the anagrams, though. Doug. ****** |

I saw someone scribbling madly at one last Sunday on the Tube, whilst returning from The Art of the Garden exhibition (Tate Britain, Milbank). (quite wonderful experience, err... the show, and not necessarily the northern line) Just by way of example, the op had stated; "I'm stuck on two plant quiz questions" & there I was wondering what kind of equipment (plant) might have 10 and 8 letters respectively. Curiously, Rotovator, Scarifier, lawnmower,& Strimmers, all have 9, whilst Wheelbarrow, scaffolding & cementmixer all have 11 Patrick |
