Surely A.S.M. Can't be A Square Meal?
--

A.S.M ...Quite right, in those days they had little room to sit and eat on
board ship and had square wooden plates to take up less room.

google says wooden trays,

What's in a word?

O.t.F .....The edge of the plate was known as the fiddle so "on the
fiddle"
meant he had a good plateful of food that was hanging over the edge.

fiddles are vertical strips of wood attached to a boat's table to stop
plates etc. sliding off when the sea is rough.
--

They might well be but in those days they were the strips of wood around the
edges of the square tray. Anyone that got food hanging over the edge was
receiving favours which is where we now get the phrase "on the fiddle".

A guided tour around the Victory includes all this sort of thing usually.
:-)
