Take your pick from Fiddle: A rack or frame of bars connected by strings, to keep table furniture in place on the cabin table in bad weather. --Ham. Nav. Encyc. Interesting - I've never seen such a concoction myself. The upright lip type thing that is sometimes fixed in place or sometimes collapsible, along the edge of the table, yes. and lashed/clamped to a stove to stop the pans falling off. Mothercare sold such things, to stop small kids pulling pans of boiling fat/water onto themselves, when our kids were small, but apparently don't do so anymore. Okay, though I'd call that a stove guard, I suppose. I know the thing you mean, certainly. But in the definition given for the quiz, I'd imagine it must mean whatever is fixed to the edge of table to stop the square trays (in this case) from ending up in the sailor's lap. snip -- Sacha www.hillhousenursery.co.uk South Devon (remove the weeds to email me) |

Martin wrote after, "Bob Hobden" Surely A.S.M. Can't be A Square Meal? -- A.S.M ...Quite right, in those days they had little room to sit and eat on board ship and had square wooden plates to take up less room. google says wooden trays, What's in a word? O.t.F .....The edge of the plate was known as the fiddle so "on the fiddle" meant he had a good plateful of food that was hanging over the edge. fiddles are vertical strips of wood attached to a boat's table to stop plates etc. sliding off when the sea is rough. -- They might well be but in those days they were the strips of wood around the edges of the square tray. Anyone that got food hanging over the edge was receiving favours which is where we now get the phrase "on the fiddle". A guided tour around the Victory includes all this sort of thing usually. :-) -- Regards Bob In Runnymede, 17 miles West of London |
