Am getting very tired of mending the door Are they nicking your stuff or just breaking in for the hell of it? A lock on the door makes them think there's something worth having. Our shed on the allotment is not locked, just an old nail through the hasp, and only the old crap tools left there. Mind you, our allotment is fortunate to be very close to the adjoining houses, one of whom is also an allotment holder (the occupant, not the house) and we think this deters them. At least we've had no trouble so far. I may be proved wrong one day. If all else fails, rig up a device which will scare the hell out of them. Someone I knew years ago had trip wires on the path to the shed, and opening the door pulled a length of fishing line which in turn pulled a load of tin cans from a shelf above the door. Steve |

And take all your tools home with you. May sound stupid but that's what we do, realised soon after we took on our allotment that it was not safe to leave anything on site. The b...t..ds even pushed one shed over 'cause they couldn't get the door open. So we bought a 1974 SWB Landrover S111 van and use that to cart everything back and forth, a mobile allotment shed, comes in handy for other things too. You can then also subscribe to alt.fan.landrover. :-) Of course they may nick the van (if they realise the transfer box is in neutral when it doesn't move). -- Bob www.pooleygreengrowers.org.uk/ about an Allotment site in Runnymede fighting for it's existence. |

Am getting very tired of mending the door While I wouldn't recomend it, a friend of mine was having trouble with scumbags breaking into his lockup, he sacrificed a few nights to sitting in his lockup with his shot gun. When they finally showed up he was sitting there with the gun pointing at them. He pointed out that it was His lockup and that he would be quite upset if it was broken into again. After that he could have left the door open with a big stack of cash in full view without the least problem. Persuade the toerags that they're not going to benifit from robbing you and they may well not bother. -- Pete The Gardener A room without books is like a body without a soul. |

I came out one evening, walked over to the group, whipped out a camera - flash - and walked off again I've used that to good effect in different circumstances. Mary |
