Permanent plant labels (yet again!)
There doesn't seem to be a FAQ on plant labels, and Googling the urg
archive doesn't bring up exactly what I want, so: I'm thinking of using soft metal labels (copper or aluminium) for permanently labeling many of my plants before my few remaining brain cells forget completely what they are. Pencil, the best thing I've found so far for writing labels, only lasts a few years IME. Two Wests do metal labels. But I don't want to rely on simply scribing them with a ball-point pen or similar. I'm looking for a set of alphabet punches (if that's the right term) so that I can print them semi-neatly. I imagine they're the sort of thing that model engineers and other metalworkers might use. Does anyone know of a supplier? (There used to be machines (e.g. on railway stations) rather like modern Dymo systems but huge, that gave you an embossed aluminium label for the princely sum of 1d, IIRC. Long gone, sadly) The alternative to metal labels might be a Dymo label. Their web site recommends the Labelpoint 350 as being able to produce UV-proof heat-proof and waterproof labels. Anyone had any experience with it for garden use? -- Chris E-mail: christopher[dot]hogg[at]virgin[dot]net |

Does anyone know of a supplier? The best tool shop I've known is Sargent's of Reading. They may not still be around, I'm afraid, and they don't seem to have a web presence. But if they're there, they'll have an eye-popping selection of tools (they even used to import fascinating, and expensive, Japanese traditional woodworking tools). Yellow Pp in library. Otherwise, I'd look at the ads in metalworking magazines. On stations I suppose some clown would vandalise them on principle; though it would be a neat thing for an ironmonger or DIY shed to have inside. [...] -- Mike. |

I think I've seen those in the ad pages of "Gardens Illustrated" mag. Or, ask at http://www.labelplant.co.uk/products.html, who say if a specialist requirement is not in their catalogue they may be able to help find it. Janet Thank you Janet. I'll follow those up. -- Chris E-mail: christopher[dot]hogg[at]virgin[dot]net |

Good toolshops should keep them, and might be cheaper. -- Rusty Open the creaking gate to make a horrid.squeak, then lower the foobar. http://www.users.zetnet.co.uk/hi-fi/ |
