Default B & Q

I've just come back from B & Q West Bromwich and I am absolutely Disgusted
with the way they handle H H plants. They have Geraniums, Petunias,
Fushias and believe it or not Surfiniasand more OUTSIDE in this freezeing
weather. Mind you, half of them were dead, the others, well, ? ? ? ? . At
Christmas, I was waiting for them to reduce some small Christmas Trees that
were growing in the pot. One day they were there - next day in the skip.

It's clear from the way they neglect their plants, that no one working for
B&Q have any interest in plants or gardening.
I often see plants at the local B&Q here in Bristol dying throug neglect.
Just wait 'til you see their fuschias later on in the year. You'll feel
tempted to get a watering can and water them the'll be so parched. They
charge as much as they do for this stuff to take account of the losses.

I have to say that at the B & Q Warehouse in Redditch, they seem to look
after their plants well. They always seem to be well watered, and any
tender plants are under cover (this weather). I've always found the garden
centre staff to be very knowledgeable and helpful, and have also had some
good plant bargains from there in the past. I'm a regular customer in the
summer! It seems that it depends on where you live as to what sort of care
the plants get :~((

I'm amazed at some of B&Q's offers. I recently saw some dead plants for sale
at half price!
Difficult one that - should I buy one healthy plant or two dead ones for the
same price.

Well B & Q in Bridgend used to have an Ex Gardencentre worker in
charge,,,result first class plants well cared for , well presented and I
should think very little loss, here Swansea and Neath ........Pathetic
plants left on trolleys and just the outside edge watered, plants all over
the place on their sides for days so any watering does no good, " trolleys
of Indoor Azaleas put outside in heavy frost. etc etc...
Speak to the manager.......you have to be joking.. came as near being rude
as is possible, what did I know of the problems of running a store of that
size....the person incharge of that department was on the sick,. same story
3 times in 6 months..
I give up..... Shed mentality.
..and as for Asda...(Wal-Mart)........they should stick to baked
beans......but then even those are dented... plants stay on the trolleys for
weeks, and Oh! surprise surprise they are dead. but then we used to water
them but someone stole the hose pipe...honest. that was the story.

Moral is Support your local independent Nursery... if he/she messes up its
his/her pocket and name that suffer. also the advice is normally good and
free, esp. if you are buying.

Unfortunately there are practically none around here in Cov. In fact I only
know one decent commercial grower, and he only sells about 8 different
plants! ... Just as well I like growing seedlings, all things considered!

Have you not tried Smiths up past Baginton airport (just outside
Coventry) - it is an excellent plant nursery, run and owned by the same
family for years - it is not a garden centre but has an excellent range
in plants.

An ASDA I used to frequent kept plants inside the store under weak electric
lighting, and stacked on trolleys, so they didn't even get much of that.
Watering and feeding was done dutifully, but it was truly horrible seeing
how long and white and weedy they became.

Last year I complained about the quality of their stock. they didnt
seem too bothered.

On the other hand I did offer them 20p for 2 very poorly
honeysuckles. they accepted and I'm pleased to say they are both doing
well in my back garden.
