I dont dare move the branches as its pretty old. It would be

and Id like to find out what art this is, and purchase a newer
one.

Some folks call these "Ming Trees," and if it is old and
authentic it probably IS jade. If it is, though these aren't my
cup of tea, it's fairly valuable -- assuming nothing is broken
off of it. You can tell jade from glass by the fact that it
almost always feels cold to the touch. Glass warms up readily
when you hold it. (Jade will too, but S L O W L Y.)

Sometimes these have "flowers" of other semi-precious stones in
the foliage.

How long ago did she bring this back? From Japan, or from China?

Hi, Muggle (Great Name!)

I bought one of these at Gump's in San Francisco almost 20 years ago. They
usually are jade or other semi-precios stones. Back then, a tiny one was
around $50, and there were much larger and more complex trees available.

As I've already reported to "Muggle," they're called "ming
trees." They've had a couple of waves of popularity -- back in
the early 1900s, and then again after WWII -- two periods when
the west was exposed to Japan and China.

They used to be common in Oriental antique shops (like Gumps -- a
WONDERFUL store if you have bottomless pockets), but I did a
search for them and found nothing on the web -- well one site,
but . . .

There is a lot of porcelain and pottery with ming-tree designs,
and even some furniture, but the trees themselves seem to have
lost favor. I seem to recall seeing them in a catalog somewhere,
though.

I see them on E-Bay all the time, usually filling up my search when I am looking for bonsai related stuff. I even see a few books on making them with wire & beads. I just put bead and beaded in my words to exclude list and they go away

Yet ANOTHER reason to avoid e-bay like it was plague! Wire and
beads do not a Ming tree make.

Just did a search on Ebay using "glass bonsai tree" and came up with a 1/2 dozen or so for sale. I see them all the time on Ebay. I actually try to stop them from comming up in my searches by using "glass" and "bead(s)" exclude words! They are very nice
looking though, just don't need another thing to collect. ;-)
