Default [IBC] literture about tropicals and subtropicals

Hi all,

a good friend of mine is doing some research and wants to know about literature for tropical and subtropical trees. He is mainly interested in ficus. It should be seroius, scientific stuff. He wants to be able to tell the exact species and possible variety
in a botanical garden where they have gathered lots of things over the years. Among them are some bonsai.

Some idea?

Thank you
Walter Pall

Hi Walter!

Serious scientific stuff? Then you need to give me some less vague keywords. I can search the CAB database, but if I say "subtropical", I'll get 174,000 hits. Be more specific, or have your friend browse the book "Exotica", which is neither scientific o
r serious, but has pictures of hundreds of tropical and subtropical plants.

Nina,

the man sits in a botanical garden and has the task to sort out all these
trees. They all have name tags, but he thinks they may be way off in many
cases. He does not ahve flowers on most and has to rely on foliage etc.
He is alos responsible to eidentify plants which have been confiscated at
customs. (Get the idea why I MUST help this man?)
Let's say semi-sophisticated literature with pictures would be OK for a
start.

best regards
Walter Pall

I have friends in APHIS, the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service; I will ask them what our customs inspectors use. I suspect, however, your friend will do well with "Exotica" (author Alfred Byrd Graf) as long as he pairs it with the Royal Hort plan
t encyclopedia, because Exotica uses decades-out-of-date names. Our library here at the USDA has an old copy, and it's often easiest to look at the pictures.
