David,
I'd really hate to see someone pay that for that book. It simply isn't that
good of a book. I bought two of those during the ABS Denver show in '97
when a lady was selling her husbands pots, books, tools left after he passed
away. The books were new, never sold and priced at $15, the reatail price on
them. I gave one to my buddy. Although nice to own ( I also had mine signed
by John at BCI Toronto '97) there is not really $145 worth of info in there.
Book and magazine collecting is fine, and if you can afford these prices I
see on ebay for books and mags, well...knock yourself out! but, everytime I
see them I think about how hard it is for me to make $145 and what my family
could do with it. Just me I guess. Anyway, if people think it'll give them
the secret of the ages for growing azaleas.....nope!
IMO, and, I'll get nothing but flak for giving it. :)
Regards,
Dale

You think like this too Dale? What a relief, I thought I was all alone in the whole of the bonsai Kingdom, especially when I see a pot . . . to die for. Somehow, I can't choose a kid to sacrifice!

Shelly,
Yep, you don't want to have to give up any kids to obtain those coveted pots
or books! Ha!
Yes, It might be some form of obscure form of OCD that causes this mental
calculation from time to time when I'm figuring how much I ( or my wife) has
to work to buy something with "after-taxes" dollars. :)
I have found though, during a combined 52 years of my wife and I working in
the medical field, that there are sure lots of people out there who never
seem to have these little personal mental conversations about such expenses!
Most of us buy any item in this order: " I like it, how much is it? and OK
I'll take it"
but,
There are a lot of folks who buy by this method:
" I like it, I'll take it, and, oh by the way, how much is it?"

Luckily there are a lot of those people "into" bonsai! :)
Regards,
Dale

Hi, Dale.

I'm with you on this.

I have a copy of Nick Lenz's book. Last time it sold for about $115 on eBay.
(and mine is hardcover (sans case)).

Knowing that Nick is coming out with a newer edition really tempts me to
offer mine for sale, but I'd want to copy a few pages first. That, and a
moral obligation to cut ABS in on the profits (John Romano scrambled to find
me a "hurt" copy.) tends to make me let it ride.

Regards,

Bart
